On August 7th, Dottie Chalmers Cutter, 4th generation owner of Chalmers Insurance, took part as a panelist at the Mainebiz Small Business Forum. Dottie brought a thoughtful, practical approach to the discussion, sharing insights that come from years of leading a family-owned business.
The forum also featured an impressive lineup of panelists, including Ben Davis, Co-founder of OpBox; Matthew O'Malia, Co-Founder & VP of TimberHP; and Matt McGrath, CEO of Systems Engineering. The discussion was moderated by Diane L. Sturgeon, District Director at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Maine District Office.
During the panel, Dottie spoke about the importance of getting to know your team. She shared her journey as a leader, and spoke about the impact that "humble inquiry" has had on her leadership style and success. Simply taking the time to understand and connect with the people you work with makes a huge difference. In her words, "If you show that curiosity as a servant leader, that's going to earn you so much goodwill and trust with your employees."
We appreciate Mainebiz for organizing this event and for bringing together a diverse group of business leaders. Dottie’s participation was a reminder of the value that family-owned businesses contribute to the broader Maine business community.
For those who attended the forum, thank you for being part of the conversation!
